Description
This Sparta Greek Shield , is the heavy shield which was used by the infantry in various periods of ancient Greece. An aspis was deeply dished and made primarily of wood. In some periods, the shield was decorated. At other times, it remained undecorated. Probably the most famous decoration is the Spartan. This was a capital lambda. The best part of the shield is the grip. Thick rope is placed at the edge of the shield and was supported by a leather or bronze fastening for the forearm at the center, known as the porpax. This type of grip allowed hoplites more mobility with the shield.
