Roman Hamata

The Roman Hamata is a type of ancient Roman armor, specifically a chainmail shirt worn by Roman legionaries and auxiliaries during the Roman Empire. It consists of interlocking metal rings, typically made of iron or sometimes bronze, forming a flexible mesh that provided good protection against slashing and stabbing attacks.

The Roman Hamata was worn over a padded undergarment called a subarmalis for additional comfort and protection. It was used alongside other types of Roman armor like the Lorica Segmentata (segmented plate armor) and Lorica Squamata (scale armor), depending on the time period and the rank of the soldier.

This type of armor was effective in providing mobility while offering reasonable protection on the battlefield. It remained in use throughout the Roman Empire, with variations in design and materials used depending on the region and era.
